We Bathe Regularly, Why Shouldn’t Our Dogs?

Pet Maintenance

Aside from the occasional depressive episode (who hasn’t been there?), we humans tend to wash ourselves pretty regularly. Exactly how often we do that varies based on our daily activities, but we generally bathe at least a couple of times a week. So why are we only washing our dogs when they’ve rolled in something foul or are shedding excessively?

While canine skin is much thinner and more sensitive than ours, it still requires consistent maintenance to prevent irritation. Regular bathing— once a month, using dog-specific shampoo—assists the skin’s natural cell turnover and provides the perfect opportunity to notice health changes in real time. Many treatable issues like foxtails, hot spots, flea bite dermatitis, or hidden lumps can surface out of nowhere. Early detection is key to your pet’s comfort.

Beyond the skin, coat type is a major factor. If you have a pup that requires regular brushing and hair cutting, consistency is key. Skipping these routines will lead to painful matting and skin irritation. When this occurs, often the only humane choice is to completely shave them down and start over fresh.

Keeping an eye on your pet’s overall skin and coat condition month to month allows you to catch and treat these problems early. So, the next time you notice your dog scratching, remember how itchy your own scalp gets when it’s overdue for a wash, and go grab the grooming kit.
